In an effort to address the increasing demand for much needed housing across the country, the Government of Canada has created a Public Land Bank mapping tool with the intent to identify available public lands across the country for future development. This tool highlights several Canada Lands Company properties that will be utilized to provide housing where it is needed most, including the Côte-de-Liesse’s Site 1 located at 125 Houde Street in Montréal. The property of 0.38-hectares (-0.93 acres) will see the adaptive reuse of an existing office building and a possible expansion that could enable up to 110 housing units.
FEDERAL LANDS INITIATIVE
Launched on August 25, 2024, in partnership with the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), Public Services and Procurement Canada (PSPC) and Housing, Infrastructure and Communities Canada (HICC); Canada Lands Company is pleased to continue enabling housing through the Federal Lands Initiative (FLI). With a goal to support the transfer of surplus federal land to eligible proponents to expedite the creation of new housing and affordable housing opportunities, the FLI will enable the leasing of land to eligible proponents at a nominal cost.
As part of the FLI, the 0.38-hectare (0.93 acres) site located at 125 Houde Street will see the adaptive reuse of an existing office building and a possible expansion that could enable up to 110 housing units. To learn more, please visit our “Enabling New Housing” page.
PROPERTY BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Canada Lands acquired the site at 3155 Côte-de-Liesse in December 2022 from Public Services and Procurement Canada.
The Project is a 4.9 hectare (12.1 acre) site previously occupied by the National Film Board of Canada (NFB) located in the City of Montreal, specifically within the Borough of St-Laurent.
In the past, this site was an important location for the NFB where it fostered the emergence of Canadian cinematography. This location played the role of engine to the Canadian film industry.
Canada Lands continues to work alongside the City of Montreal to create a master plan for the site. Certain buildings will be repurposed, and new construction will be added to create a vibrant new mixed-used community.
